Chase Brown Oliva 9/22/12 English 102 Short Story Analysis: The Red Convertible â€Å"The Red Convertible† by Louise Erdrich is a short story about two Native American brothers, Lyman and Henry, and their growing bond as brothers. Symbolism is used rather heavily in this story. One of the main symbols of the story, as noted in the title, is the red convertible. The red convertible symbolizes the relationship status of the two brothers, and the struggles they face as Henry is drafted into the Vietnam War as well as when he returns home. In the beginning of the story, Lyman and Henry go in together and purchase a red Oldsmobile convertible. In the beginning the condition of the convertible was fantastic. Although the story never†¦show more content†¦Lyman soon realized he was wrong. The war had torn Henry to the point that he would stare lifelessly at a television screen for hours on end. He had not said more than a few words to Lyman for some time. Angered, Lyman purposefully damages the red convertible to get the attention of his brother. The damaging of the car represents the anger felt by Lyman that the relationship with his brother had been destroyed by the war. By destroying the car, Lyman is metaphorically changing the condition of the red convertible to match that of their brotherly bond. â€Å"Now I don’t even know if I can get it to start again, let alone get it anywhere near its old condition.† (Erdrich 328) Henry states about the car, symbolizing his feelings towards their relationship. In the final portion of the story, Henry finally fixes the car back into decent condition after Lyman damages it. At this point in the story, the audience is thinking that the relationship is mended as the brothers take the newly restored red convertible for a leisure ride to the river. As Lyman and Henry load the trunk with a full cooler, Lyman gets the same feeling. Henry is joking and laughing, and it seems as if the bond between the brothers is restored until they reach th e river. At the river they get into a scuffle over who will keep the car. Ryan Henry Carol Bove ENGLIT 0625 26 October 2015 Maupassant’s Gender Role Phenomenon Guy De Maupassant, a French writer in the late 1800’s, is considered one of the pioneers of the short story genre. One of the most important themes in Guy De Maupassant’s short stories is how he captures the roles of men and women in late nineteenth century France, and how he incorporates his own personal twist to each gender’s identity. In this essay, I plan to take a look at the gender roles in the film â€Å"Le Plaisir† and how it relates to Maupassant’s personal life. In order to fully understand how Maupassant presents his gender roles, one must first familiarize with his early life and childhood. Maupassant was born in Dieppe, France in 1850. His parents separated when he was only 11, and he moved to Normandy with his mother. He never saw much of his father, who left when the marriage failed. His father was known to frequent brothels and whore houses for comfort. He and his mother were extremely close , and they adored each other. However, this relationship was very unhealthy. She let him do whatever he wanted, at a young age he enjoyed boating and fishing, so he would often took his boat out by himself without any supervision. On top of that, his rejected mother would often share her negative views on men with her young son. Lady in Her Bath Free Essays

The Renaissance began in the late 15th century and spanned from Italy to throughout Europe, and it was a rebirth of everything ranging from economy to art. Francois Clouet was a painter to the Kings and his work â€Å"Lady in Her Bath†, embraced this new form of artistic expression. In this paper I am going to explain how the â€Å"Lady in Her Bath† painting reflects the culture and ideology of the Renaissance Era and as well, explain some of the values, influences, themes, and techniques used. She (the woman in the painting) is wearing what looks to be a couple of expensive pieces of jewelry, which in the Renaissance Era, it wasn’t normal for individuals to wear jewelry because most of the people were too poor to buy things that weren’t a necessity to support themselves or their families. Another sign that the woman must be wealthy or from a wealthy family is that she has a fresh bowl of fruit sitting next to her while she is bathing. To the poor, baths were to clean themselves up not for relaxation. Some of the techniques Clouet continued to use were the conventions of the international portrait style which was prevalent throughout the courts of Europe. These techniques were passed down from Clouet’s father, Jean Clouet (Answer. com). Oil painting and water color was also other techniques Clouet used. The term Renaissance is French for â€Å"rebirth†, and it was the rebirth of Europe from the 14th through the early 17th centuries. Europe emerged from the economic stagnation of the Middle Ages and experienced a time of financial growth. This Era turned artistic, social, scientific and political thoughts in new directions. The Renaissance generated three ideas that were frowned upon during the Middle Ages; secularism (the belief that religion has no place in the day to day activities), humanism (the cultural and intellectual movement that emphasized secular concerns as a result of the discovery of literature and art), and individualism (belief in the importance of the individual and the virtues of self reliance and personal independence) (Wikipedia. om). Writers and artists began to focus on the individual and their potential. During the time of the Renaissance Era, people were becoming more aware of Christianity and the Catholic religion was being pushed aside. Religious books were being rewritten and new laws were coming into order as well. The wealthy people were the ones keeping the Catholic religion alive while the poor were the ones converting to Christianity. On the other hand, the intangible resources of the organization refer to the non-physical devices which include intellectual property, patents and the tacit knowledge within the organization. The company has developed an information management system for preserving this information. The third resource of the organization is its human resource.
