Wartime Stories Essay While there are few that claim war is one of the greatest institutions of humanity, it is certainly one of the most discussed, more recalled, and most participated in creations civilization has yet conceived. The lessons that can be learned from wars vary greatly in ethical and moral implications, from those that say war must be participated in with ruthless precision, while some feel that war must be fought with decency and honor. Whether to sacrifice oneââ¬â¢s own life for a greater good, or to fight merely to preserve oneââ¬â¢s life at all costs is a question of utility value versus ethical egoism. Movies such as Saving Private Ryan present interesting ethical dilemmas concerning a soldierââ¬â¢s internal and external ethical duty during war. While the men are charged with possibly giving their own lives for the life of only one other soldier, they are torn between the duty to their country and their orders, and their dissatisfaction over having to devalue their own existence for that of someone they do not even know. They feel a greater duty to each other, as well as the war effort in general, but feel their mission to save Private Ryan falls outside their duty, and effects little their honor. However, the movie persists in continuously asking the question of wartime ethics. The question for the men is whether their life is worth that of Ryanââ¬â¢s, merely one soldier among the millions. The order they have to get Ryan is one of utility value, as dictated by the rules of service. It is a soldierââ¬â¢s duty to follow orders, no matter how much they may disagree. If soldiers began disobeying orders it could spread and eventually break down the entire system. The obligation that Captain Miller feels in the movie is that the successful fulfillment of his orders will not only continue to hold loyal to the chain of command, but will also bring his unit one step closer to going home. However, when finding Ryan, the situation changes as Ryan refuses to come with him, agreeing that his life is worth only the value of those men with which he fights. Still following his orders, Captain Miller does everything in his power to save Ryan, still fight the war, and keep alive the chain of command, never once letting his own desire to go home influence his loyalty to his orders. The soldiers in the movie spend the majority debating the value of saving Private Ryan as opposed to fighting the war and trying to win it. They feel that they are on a mission that unduly puts their lives on the line for little purpose, as they value their lives far more than Ryanââ¬â¢s life. Their individual egoism would seem to oppose the entire concept of being a soldier in the military, as the chain of command is dependent upon groups of individuals functioning as a single unit. Even as a single unit, they are forced to abandon their individualistic ideals, as the unit is in as much danger as each individual. In the end, most of the men die, save for the most vocally opposed soldier, the most inexperienced and cowardly, and Private Ryan. The men fulfilled their orders, but paid with their lives, as they feared they would. The death of the soldiers, including Captain Miller, seems to suggest that in sacrifice lays honor, at least in war. The soldiers all recognized the mission as wrong and dangerous, but their duty as soldiers required them to fulfill it. On the one hand, the mission was fulfilled, but on the other hand they all died. The utility value of their sacrifice saw that not only was Ryan saved, but the important bridge was held, and they did in fact fight a very important part of the war, as well as a less important but far more ââ¬Å"decentâ⬠part. The fact that Captain Miller is killed by a German soldier that he previously released rather than killed also seems to suggest that decency in war is often rewarded with death, as he and most of his soldiers exemplify. The senselessness of war and the mass violence of modern warfare would almost suggest that loyalty and duty to anything but oneself is a foolââ¬â¢s errand, but it also suggests that by fighting for the best attributes of humanity, like altruism and sacrifice, the entire human race takes a step closer to a civilization free of things like war.

EXISTING WASP SYSTEMS: The following are the remaining WASP Systems in use at present in the sea Aerofoil(Wing-Sail) Flettner Rotor Rig Soft Sail Towing Kites (Skysails) Wind Turbine (Skysails) Aerofoil (Wing-Sail): This form of marine propulsion works in the similar way as an aeroplane wing, producing pressure differences between opposite sides which create a force , supported by central mast. The trust provided by the solid structures of the sail is more with less drag than conventional sails. This technology came into wide development in 1980s by Japanese and still some vessels use this technology nowadays with research into the application of such systems proceeding. Various research is been carried out and one of the example using this aerofoil concept is this ship model which is called the ecoliner. It is a type of cargo vessel which propels by using combination of high-tech sail and engine power. This combined feature, make it possible to work like a normal cargo ship with similar service of speed, freight price and other factors. In general wing-sails have a high lift coefficient compared to soft sails which will be discussed in further topics. This means this system has more advantage over the other conventional sails even though initial investment in the system will be high. Various designs now incorporate a frame with a material surface to keep the minimum weight. Flettner Rotor Rig: Flettner rotors consist of cylinders which are of spinning type and tall mounted onto the vessels deck. The vessel is set in motion by using the Magnus effect. The Magnus effect is produced whenever pressure difference occurring around spinning object. This concept was done by researcher Anton Flettner, a German naval architect. Later researchers conducted experimenting into its operation in 1980 when Saudi oil crisis happened. But this system never overtook the diesel engine usage. However in the 1920s Fletner rotor operated in sea for a quiet a long year proving reliable form of wind propulsion. To understand this system works, an understanding of the Magnus effect is necessary. The Magnus effect or force happens when there is a pressure difference around a spinning object. However there are some smaller vessels like fishing boats still depend on soft sails as an auxiliary propulsion force and the uses of soft sail are important in this fishing boats Towing Kites (Skysails): Towing Kites function on same basis as several conventional kite arrangements used on such things as Paragliding and kite boarding, etc. the propulsion of the vessel is assisted by the kite which harness the energy from wind. Since wind-conditions are not always sufficient, the Skysails system is designed to function as a supplementary power source, in addition to the ships engine. Skysail consists of a towing kite, a control system, a launch and recovery system and a wind-optimized routing system. The Para foil kite is constructed out ofà high-strength, weatherproof textiles, andà is designed in such a way that it can achieve optimal aerodynamic efficiency at any wind speed. The steering system operates automatically and is composed of the control pod and the control system. The towing kite and the towing rope are linked by the control pod. Much like autopilot systems in airplanes, the Skysails sensors collect data that is processed by the systems software, which sends control orders accordingly. The launch and recovery system is responsible for automatically recovering and launchingà the towing kite, control pod and towing rope. The kite is attached at only one point to the launch and recovery mast, enabling high manoeuvrability. A telescopic mast lifts the towing kiteà during its launch. The wind unfolds the kite to its full size while the reef system launches the reef ropes. While the towing kite is decoupled from the launch and recovery mast, the towing rope is released. The power transmission system consists of aà towing rope, a force transmission point (tow point), and winch, and is responsible for transferring the tractive force from the kite to the ship.à The mounting system ensures that the towing kites force is aligned ideally to suit the winds direction. The routing system is composed ofà a weather forecasting performance calculator, which processes the weather forecasting data and of a decision-making model, which calculates the optimal route following priorities set by the ships owner. Finally, the routing system has a route recommendation feature, which translates the information into a series of waypoints read by the shipmaster. The SkySails system also improves the ships safety and performance on water as it damps the waves so that the ship suffers from less slamming and torsion forces. Use of Symbolism in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Essay -- Samuel Ta
Samuel Taylor Coleridgeââ¬â¢s use of symbolism in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner lends the work to adults as a complex web of representation, rather than a simple story about a sailor. The author uses the story of a sailor and his adventures to reveal aspects of life. This tale follows the Mariner and his crew as they travel between the equator and the South Pole, and then back to England. Without the symbols, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner would be simply a poem about an old mariner who is telling a story about killing a bird to a guest at a wedding. Of course, anyone who reads the poem can see that there is more to it than just a simple telling of a story. The first symbol in the poem is the wedding that the guest and the Mariner are at. This is a highly significant detail, because Coleridge could have made the story telling take place at any setting, but he chose a wedding. The reason for this was because a wedding is a very religious and very happy occasion. Weddings symbolize new beginnings and happiness. The reason that Coleridge decided to have this horrid tale told at a wedding could be for any number of reasons. I feel that the setting was chosen because of the new beginnings implied. As the Mariner tells his tale, the guest is held captive and when the story is done, the guest becomes essentially a new man and goes off to live the rest of his life. Had the tale taken place at a funeral, the heavy feeling of ending would have destroyed the symbolism of new beginnings. It could have been an ending for life, for happiness, and for everything else. If this had happened, then the fact that he rose the next day would not have been as significant. Therefore, the wedding is a very important symbol for this poem. Another significant symbol throughout the poem is the albatross. It first appears in the first section and it is a symbol of good omen for the sailors. The albatross is a white bird, which is probably the reason why many Christians of the time saw it as a holy symbol. Because it was a white bird, which was a sign of righteousness, it therefore was considered a good omen. In this poem, the albatross symbolizes good fortune. When the Mariner kills the albatross, for absolutely no reason, the good fortune that has come upon the ship leaves. Symbolically, the Mariner did not kill a simple seabird, but instead an omen of good fortune, which is why... ...riner took a gamble with his religion, and now the pair is taking a gamble for his life. Life-In-Death ultimately wins over Death in the game, and the Marinerââ¬â¢s shipmates die at his feet, yet he lives on. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a highly significant poem of a complex web of representation that is very dependent on symbolism. The symbols of the wedding, the albatross, the blood that the Mariner sucks in order to announce the ship and the game between Death and Life-In-Death are only a few of the symbols that add meaning and depth to the poem. If it were not for the symbols, the poem would simply be the story of a Mariner telling his tale to a wedding guest, and then the poem would have no meaning to anyone. When reading this poem, the reader can feel much like the wedding guest, entranced and hypnotized by the storyteller. This is because of the symbolism exhibited through the poem. Even if the reader of the poem does not fully understand the symbols in the verse, the intuitive mind will catch them and understand the detailed meaning. The symbols themselves in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner are therefore the part of the poem that makes it so intense and interesting.

Danger, devotion, abomination, curiosity, and alterations are always present in our lives. You might think that Pleasantville is pleasant. Well do I have some news for you: nope. The name ââ¬Å"Pleasantvilleâ⬠is just a simple irony thatââ¬â¢s all. In Pleasantville, everyone is so empty in their minds. For instance, every character always did the same thing over and over. Itââ¬â¢s like everything falls into the right way that it should be. The basketball players always score, the wives are always cooking and taking good care of the husbands and children. Husbands are working, children are little precious angels who never get in any kind of trouble. No worries, no problems, just plain good stability. There is no wrong for them because everything was in sync. It would be really tough to adjust to that kind environment where everything becomes dull and unbearable.
